[EXAMINER] 16 April 2013- UNICEF announced yesterday that the government of Yemen has launched a major public information campaign to fight malnutrition – emphasizing that nutrition needs to be placed at the top of the agenda as without properly nourished children, the country cannot fully develop.

Representative of UNICEF, Julien Harneis expressed, “This is a heartening example of partnership between government, the United Nations, donors and the private sector that will serve the best interests of the people of Yemen. We are grateful for the enormous efforts made by the Yemeni Government to tackle malnutrition. Despite difficult times, treatment centres have been opened, health workers have been trained and many children have been treated.”

“Children, who are stunted, especially during the first two years of their life, will never grow to their full potential. We must do more to support public health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, food and agriculture, education, child protection and social welfare, to address the underlying causes of malnutrition,” Harneis adds.
