On 31 January 2017, Michael Møller, Director-General of the United Nations in Geneva invited Geneva-based agencies to attend an Executive Briefing about the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement.

Launched in January 2017, this seventh issue of Nutrition Exchange introduces an exciting new phase in the publication’s development where ENN will now be publishing NEX twice a year and will bring together experiences and learning from SUN Countries as well as other content. It has been made possible by funding from DFID for ENN to provide knowledge management services to SUN Countries – particularly those that are fragile and conflict-affected.

In December 2016, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Benin pledged €14,750,000 to country-wide projects in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The OMI DELTA fund will run from 1 December 2016 to 30 June 2021.

In January 2017, 3 videos commissioned by SNV* were shortlisted for the 2017 Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) which champion the creative works of visual storytelling that inspire activism, compassion and social transformation. On 2 February 2017, Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union sent a letter to the Speakers of Parliament of the 58 SUN Countries to encourage action against malnutrition. The letter was accompanied by a concept note detailing the benefit of a Parliamentarian consultation on nutrition to strengthen parliamentarian engagement and contribution to the the collaborative work of the SUN Movement.

In January 2017, the first draft Work Programme of the Decade of Action on Nutrition was shared publicly and is available for comment. The Work Programme has been developed according to the mandates of UN General Assembly Resolution 70/269 and taking into account WHA Resolution 69/8

From 29 to 30 September 2016,a “parliamentary dialogue on nutrition” brought together 35 members of the parliamentary network for nutritional security in Burkina Faso.

Despite important progress in poverty reduction, significant segments of the Mexican population still face food insecurity and nutrition challenges. The Ministry of Social Development (SEDESOL) documents that in 2012, as many as 27.4 million people (23.3 percent of the total population) reported some deprivation related to food access. The prevalence of deprivation related to food access is especially high among indigenous population (35.4 percent), youth (28.1 percent), and people with disabilities (31.2 percent).

In 2016, following the 2015 Global Forum on Nutrition-Sensitive Social Protection Programs in Moscow, Russia, the document Leveraging Social Protection Programs for Improved Nutrition: Compendium of Case Studies, was shared on the SecureNutrition website. The compendium serves as a mile marker on progress to improve nutrition outcomes through social protection investments, and a rich database of strategies and approaches in diverse contexts.

On 19 January 2017, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) launched the Panorama of Food and Nutrition Security in Latin America and the Caribbean report.

On 10 January 2017, UNICEF launched the new #EarlyMomentsMatter campaign with support from the LEGO Foundation to drive increased awareness about the importance of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life and the impact of early experiences on the developing brain.

During the 2017 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the World Food Programme launched the Healthy Not Hungry campaign which aims to accelerate progress to Goal 2 — Zero Hunger, and Goal 3 — Good Health and Well-Being. The Healthy Not Hungry campaign is a joint initiative of the World Food Programme (WFP), Project Everyone and UNICEF. The campaign focuses on the close relationship between ending hunger and the ability to live a healthy, active and full life.

On 21 December 2016, Minister Yves Fernane Manfoumbi of Gabon’s Ministry of Agriculture, Breeding and Rural Development, signed a letter of commitment to join the 57 SUN Countries and 3 Indian States in the SUN Movement, fighting to end malnutrition in all its forms.
