Progress towards SUN 3.0 Strategic Objectives (SO)

SO.1

The SUN Yemen Secretariat, based in the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, plays a major role in coordination among stakeholders. It also has a pivotal role in preparing and coordinating the National Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan and monitoring and evaluating the Common Results Framework. The SUN Yemen Secretariat has worked closely with partners in developing food systems pathways, Nutrition for Growth commitments and the Yemen Action Plan on Child Wasting. These plans include several priority interventions and are implemented in partnership with United Nations organizations.

SO.2

The SUN Yemen Secretariat has improved knowledge of national priorities among United Nations and donor partners. A road map for operationalizing the National Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan has been discussed with stakeholders, and a call to action for sustainable interventions has been signed with United Nations partners. The SUN Yemen Secretariat has encouraged national civil society organizations and the business sector to establish SUN Networks and has shared a concept note with SUN global networks and potential financiers. The Secretariat has developed a vision for the humanitarian development and peace nexus in Yemen and has signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to improve the nexus application and develop a national guidance note.

SO.3

The SUN Yemen Secretariat makes sure that national stakeholders are informed about and able to participate in global and regional initiatives. United Nations partners (mainly UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Food Programme) provide training and capacity-building interventions for technical staff in the health, agriculture and fisheries sectors. The United Nations Food Systems Summit Dialogues helped participants from all sectors shape their priorities. Great effort has been given to strengthening the nutrition information system, but the gap is huge, and more support is required. The Secretariat is working on enhancing the country’s capacities regarding social protection and water, sanitation and hygiene.

SO.4

The SUN Yemen Secretariat has established an office in the city of Aden to bridge the fragmented leadership and technical efforts. With two active steering committees and two sectoral technical teams, the Secretariat supports country leadership and enhances the mutual accountability of stakeholders. The role of the Secretariat in directing humanitarian development and peace nexus efforts will strengthen its effectiveness. The road map for the National Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan defines the requirements for shared responsibilities, improved SUN subnational governance, the Mutual Accountability Framework, subnational coordination mechanisms and plans of actions, and enhancements to funding mechanisms.
