On 9th April 2015, a task team of the SUN Movement Lead Group met in Tanzania for a two day meeting to discuss, debate and discover potential options for the future of the SUN Movement. Hosted by the Government of Tanzania, representatives included SUN Lead Group members, SUN Government Focal Points and SUN Network Coordinators. The event was opened with a powerful speech by President Jakaya Kikwete who stressed the need for country level achievements to be sustained, supported and accelerated by global structures. He also commended the collective efforts towards Tanzania’s five-year nutrition investment strategy that has led to a decrease in stunting by 17% (from 42% in 2010 to 34.7% 2014).  As a member of the SUN Movement Lead Group, he reminded participants about the impact strong political will, effective financing and improved coordination can have for scaling up nutrition.

The meeting comes after the SUN Movement Independent Comprehensive Evaluation was shared across the movement in a consultative process between January and March 2015.  A synthesis of country and network responses provided the basis of movement wide views which were needed to inform the task team during the meeting. Participants discussed potential options for SUN Movement priorities, operational structures and stewardship in the next SUN Movement Strategy (2016-2020). Outcomes of the meeting will be provided to the SUN Movement Lead Group for their high level meeting in May 2015 to determine the strategic direction post-2015.
