2016 World Toilet Day highlights the need for better workplace and urban water and sanitation

On 19 November 2016, World Toilet Day was celebrated around the world behind the theme ‘toilets and jobs’ to generate awareness about the need for access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for better health and productivity at work. The day also marked the launched WaterAid’s second annual report on the state of the world’s toilets titled, ‘Overflowing cities: The State of the World’s Toilets 2016’.

GAIN event explores the issues of nutrition and food systems as urban populations increase

On 10 November 2016, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) together with the Global Health Centre, held an event in Geneva, Switzerland titled, “Protecting our Planet’s Health: Growing Cities, Poor Nutrition, What Can Be Done?”. The event provided a moment to highlight nutrition issues that may be faced by the four billion (and increasing) people in the world who live in cities. Almost a quarter of them live in slums and struggle to access a healthy and diverse diet.

Ending Hunger: What would it cost?

In October 2016, the report titled, “Ending Hunger: What would it cost?” was launched by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). According to the study, it will cost USD 11 billion a year of additional investments until 2030 to end hunger. This means a 40 percent increase over current spending of USD 8.6 billion on global hunger programs–based on the traditional share of donor spending in developing countries.

Official nomination of the first lady of the Republic of Guinea as ambassador of nutrition

On 21 September 2016, the Ministry of Health, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and all of the nutrition partners held a ceremony for the official bestowal of the title of Ambassador for Nutrition upon H.E Mrs Djené Kaba Condé, first lady of the Republic of Guinea. The title, symbolically engraved on a marble plaque, was solemnly handed over by Mrs Séraphine Wakana, Coordinator of the United Nations System in Guinea.
