Throughout October and November 2015, Action Against Hunger worked with Peru’s most famous chefs to raise awareness of chronic child malnutrition. The fourth ‘restaurants against hunger’ campaign ran for two months and raised money for the detection, prevention, and treatment of malnutrition from special menus designed by the leading chefs for some 200 restaurants across the country.
Peru is still among the countries with the highest rate of child malnutrition, along with Bolivia. According to government statistics for 2014, 14% of children in Peru under five years have chronic malnutrition. In rural areas the figures are much higher – in Huancavelica, for example, 35% of children have chronic malnutrition. This indicator is also high in the departments of Cajamarca (32.2%), Amazonas (30.8%), Apurimac (27.3%), Ayacucho (26.3%) and Lima (26.1%).
