missing_piece_of_the_puzzle_001On 8 June 2016, on the third anniversary of the 2013 Nutrition for Growth Summit, the Generation Nutrition campaign launched the new report – “Nutrition Funding: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle”.

Each year, undernutrition claims the lives of nearly three million children under the age of five and costs the global economy billions of dollars in lost productivity. The report calculates that, at the current rate of progress, states are going to miss the 2025 World Health Assembly targets on stunting and acute malnutrition by a significant margin. Increasing funding is essential if these and the other global nutrition targets are to be met on time.

The new report calls for the next high-level nutrition funding summit to be announced immediately and for all stakeholders to step up and pledge ambitious and SMART financial commitments. The full set of recommendations by the Generation Nutrition campaign, including those for individual countries, can be found on pp.7-8 of the report.

About Nutrition for Growth

The Nutrition for Growth summit was hosted by the UK government, the Brazilian government and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation in London on 8 June 2013. The summit produced Nutrition for Growth Compact that pledged more than $4bn (£2.6bn) for nutrition programmes until 2020. The Compact aimed to prevent at least 20 million children from being stunted and save at least 1.7 million lives by 2020. It was endorsed by 90 stakeholders, including development partners, businesses, scientific and civil society groups.

In June 2014, UK Department for International Development (DFID) shared the report ‘Nutrition for Growth: one year on’. The report provides an update on progress made by the United Kingdom government to reach commitments made at Nutrition for Growth. Highlights of the report include the expansion of programmes in Africa and Asia to address the immediate and underlying causes of undernutrition. The report also reflects on the development of a number of new research partnerships to identify innovative solutions to this global challenge.
