Zambia’s SUN Civil Society Alliance and National Broadcasting Corporation Team Up to tell the ‘Silent Story’ of undernutrition

The Silent Story is a documentary showcasing the magnitude and effect of undernutrition in Mumbwa District of Zambia. It is a collaboration between the CSOSUN Alliance and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC). This happened when ZNBC’s current affairs manager Ms Faith Kandaba, who participated in a training facilitated by the CSO-SUN to promote better understanding of nutrition, suggested to do a documentary that would be aired on Zambia’s main Television Station – ZNBC.

The CSO-SUN’s staff together with ZNBC staff travelled from Lusaka to Mumbwa to conduct research for the documentary. This was done through interviews with families, health personnel and state actors. Footage was collected and produced by ZNBC staff and CSOSUN.

“A Silent Story”, premiered on 12th December 2013 at 18:20 hours on ZNBC. It must be noted that this is primetime hour when most viewers are tuned in for the main news at 19:00 hours and that the CSO-SUN did not pay for airtime (AIRED FOR FREE), even when it re-aired on the 14th of December 2013 and 28th December 2013.

For this ‘Silent Story’ the CSO SUN would like to thank the management and staff of ZNBC, in particular Ms Faith Kandaba for championing the fight against undernutrition in Zambia through the media. The CSO-SUN extends its thanks to the ‘Silent Story’ camera man, Mr Che Mutale, the Ministry of Health Director in Mumbwa, CSO-SUN Mumbwa district team and to CSO-SUN former staff Mr Lloyd Mudenda Handongwe for the guidance he provided while collecting footage in Mumbwa.
