On 11 January 2017, former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, launched a strategic plan and roadmap to achieve zero hunger by 2030. The plan titled, “Synthesis Report of the Nigeria Zero Hunger Strategic Review” articulates what Nigeria needs to do to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2)—one of the recently adopted global goals that seeks to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture” by 2030

From 12-14 December 2016, the Federal Republic of Nigeria hosted the 32nd Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA) annual meeting. The event, under the patronage of the Commissions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), brought together representatives of Sahel and West African governments in addition to civil society and private sector organisations and technical and financial partners

Today, the new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. Let’s help write that story by setting goals and taking stock. A story where the conflict of shifting the focus of food systems from merely providing food, to providing nourishment, is resolved – making our world a prosperous one, where no one is left behind. A story where building effective partnerships and breaking down silos, is the inciting action that makes this world a reality. A story where women and girls are the main characters, at the centre of all action. A story which ends by making malnutrition, in all its forms, history by 2030.

On 17 December 2016, the exposition “Wallu Doom” brought hundreds to Pikine city, to the east of Dakar city centre in Senegal, to get involved in activities about complementary feeding. The exposition was the final step to a behaviour change strategy put in place across the country. Parents of young children, women of reproductive age, breastfeeding mothers, grandparents, community leaders and media were key spectators at the event.

From 13 to 17 December 2016, a delegation from Côte d’Ivoire embarked on a learning exchange with colleagues in Senegal on the topic of converging nutrition interventions. Convergence across sectors is a priority area for Côte d’Ivoire’s National Multi-sector Nutrition Plan (Plan National Multisectoriel de Nutrition 2016-2020). The learnings from the visit will help inform the delegation on decentralising the plan to regional, departmental, communal and village level nutrition committees.

From 16 – 17 November 2016, the civil society platform for nutrition in Madagascar (Plateforme HINA), in partnership with the National Office for Nutrition and Action Contre la Faim, organised an event that brought together actors from across sectors for two days of celebration, sharing and learning.
