Talented Slam Poet launches a new music video with civil society to end malnutrition in Burkina Faso

In March 2017, Burkina Faso’s Civil Society Network for Nutrition (Resonut Burkina Faso) launched a new music video with strong messages about the importance of good nutrition. The song was composed by a young and talented slam poet named Slim, winner of the 2013 contest “I slam for my homeland” in Burkina Faso. Resonut Burkina Faso brings together 32 organizations with the vision of a “Burkina Faso free from hunger and malnutrition”.

SPRING/Senegal Partners with Six Local Radio Stations to Promote Nutrition, Hygiene, and Gender Best Practices

Due to the relatively short, two-year duration of the program, SPRING’s work in Senegal relies on key partnerships with local producer organizations and media outlets to extend the reach of nutrition messages. Community radio programs, which are widely patronized in the three regions where SPRING intervenes, are a key element of SPRING/Senegal’s social and behavior change communication (SBCC) approach. This SBCC approach uses radio, video, and community mobilization events to disseminate information on themes related to nutrition, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, hygiene, and gender.

On 22 March 2017, on the occasion of World Water Day, WaterAid UK launched a new report on the simple infrastructure needed that can help mitigate the dangers of extreme weather events on water, sanitation and hygiene. Climate change manifests itself in many ways including water change. Unpredictable weather patterns – referred to in the report as ‘wild water’ – mean more storm surges, ruinous flooding, prolonged droughts and contaminated water sources.

Côte d’Ivoire celebrates International Women’s Day with a series of inspiring events

In March 2017, the African Development Bank partnered with the Government of Côte d’Ivoire, UN agencies, civil society organizations and other development partners to mark the celebration of International Women’s Day. The commemorations began with the first meeting on the concertation framework on gender, chaired by the Minister of Women, Child Protection and Solidarity, Côte d’Ivoire, Mariatou Koné on 1 March 2017 at the Cultural Palace in Abidjan. A conference on 9 March about “Women in the working world” was then held at the Université Houphouet Boigny (Amphithéâtre A, Centre de Ressources pédagogiques) with Ms. Koné, ,Marie Goretti Nduwayo of UN Women and Jean-François Valette, the European Union Amabssador to Côte d’Ivoire.

UN officials call for urgent action to avert famine in South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and north-east Nigeria

On 10 March 2017, following country visits, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien urged the international community for comprehensive action to save people facing or at risk of famine. In his address to the Security Council the top United Nations official warned, without collective and global efforts, people risked starving to death and succumbing to disease, stunted children and lost futures, and mass displacements and reversed development gains.
