Civil society and advocates for nutrition security play an important role in encouraging the best policies that will achieve the best impact on nutritional outcomes. This tool provides a general overview of what the SDGs are and why they are important for nutrition. The new scorecard makes an assessment on commitments at the WHA targets to reduce stunting, wasting, anaemia, low birth weight, childhood overweight and increasing exclusive breastfeeding.

Optimizing Primary School Meals in the Kyrgyz Republic

Since 2006, the government of the Kyrgyz Republic has implemented a national School Meals Programme for over 440,000 primary school children. In January 2013, the World Food Programme and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic launched a pilot intervention to improve the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of the national School Meals Programme. While programmes in lower-middle-income or low-income contexts tend to be—at least partially—dependent on external funding, this effort has demonstrated at way to provide high quality, nutritious meals within the limits of the available national state resources, in hygienic conditions, and with strong community participation.

A turning point for the next generation of Filipinos with the launch of a new nutrition action plan

On 2 May 2017, the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022 was launched by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in the city of Iloilo. Assistant Health Secretary Maria-Bernardita Flores, also the executive director of the NNC, identified the province of Iloilo as one of the 38 priority areas of the program because of its high number of stunted children. The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) will act as the country’s blueprint of actions for nutrition improvement, led by the NNC, together with key national and local stakeholders.

Inspiration from leaders at the State and community level during a visit to Uttar Pradesh

On 24 May 2017, SUN Movement Coordinator, Ms Gerda Verburg, along with a delegation from the SUN Movement Secretariat, travelled to the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh to review progress and the path ahead for scaling up nutrition. Uttar Pradesh State joined the SUN Movement in 2016 with a letter of commitment from Chief Secretary, Alok Ranjan. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state of India and recent surveys report that 50 percent of children under five years are stunted, 34 percent are underweight, and 10 percent are wasted.

Nutrition and a new Director-General at the 70th World Health Assembly

From 22-31 May 2017, the 70th World Health Assembly (WHA) took place in Geneva, Switzerland, bringing together Ministers of Health and delegates from across the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 191 Member States. The WHA, which endorses the six global targets for improving maternal, infant and young child nutrition, and the WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs 2013-2020, made significant progress on the nutrition agenda.

The 2017 Joint Child Malnutrition Estimates are now available

In May 2017, the inter-agency team (UNICEF-WHO-The World Bank Group) released new joint estimates for child stunting, overweight, underweight, wasting and severe wasting (May 2017 edition) using the same methodology as in previous years. Good nutrition allows children to grow, develop, learn, play, participate and contribute – while malnutrition robs children. Despite this opportunity, the estimates from 1990 to 2017 reveal that we are still far from a world without malnutrition.

Brazil makes SMART commitments as part of the Decade of Action on Nutrition

On the first day of the Seventieth World Health Assembly, Brazil became the first country to make SMART commitments as part of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016–2025. Ricardo Barros, Minister of Health of Brazil, made the announcement at a ceremony in Geneva. The commitments were welcomed by Dr Oleg Chestnov, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Noncommunicable Diseases, and Dr Carissa Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) the Regional Director for WHO in the Americas.
