From 27 August to 1 September 2017, thousands gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, to exchange ideas, foster new thinking and develop solutions to the most pressing water-related issues. As part of our partnership with Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) Partnership, we collaborated for the second year in a row to bring the nutrition narrative into the WASH discussion.

In August 2017, Action Against Hunger, SHARE and WaterAid launched a new report which ascertains that the integration of action on nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is fundamental to the recipe for success. By analysing the approaches governments and donors are taking, the report highlights ways in which progress is being made, and calls on decision-makers to shift mindsets, change ways of working, and to invest now in effective integration to improve child health.

Prior to its most recent TA, MQSUN conducted a nutrition policy review and strategy alignment in Tajikistan in 2014 and a nutrition gap analysis and stakeholder mapping in 2015-2016. Also in 2015, MQSUN supported a multisectoral workshop to have an initial dialogue around a CRF—a single and agreed set of expected nutrition results generated through engagement of different sectors of government and stakeholders. The outcome was an agreed-upon CRF goal: the reduction of stunting.

The provincial Government of Kwango organized a provincial conference in Kenge from 22 to 24 August 2017, with the technical and financial support of UNICEF, on the repositioning of nutrition as a development priority. This conference forms part of national efforts and commitments to scale up nutrition (SUN), aiming to create a multi-sectoral environment that is favourable to nutrition in Kwango. At the end of the three days’ work, its participants adopted a Provincial Charter incorporating different stakeholders’ commitments to the fight against malnutrition and agreed to establish a provincial multi-sectoral governance and coordination committee for the fight against malnutrition in Kwango.

Held under the slogan “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together”, World Breastfeeding Week highlights that breastfeeding provides the necessary nutrients for the growth, development and survival of children around the world. Various activities were organized throughout the whole of the Latin American continent during World Breastfeeding Week 2017. These included: free entry to breastfeeding clinics to provide information; information fairs and talks to share healthy breastfeeding practice; and information-giving for the users of existing services for expectant and nursing mothers.
