In June 2017, the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) launched UNSCN NEWS 42. The latest issue focuses on the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and provides a window of opportunity to enhance coordination and cooperation amongst all actors.

On 27 June 2017, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UNICEF, in collaboration with Alive & Thrive and the support of the National Assembly and the SUN Movement Secretariat, held a two-day sub-regional seminar in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Titled, “Promoting Maternal & Child Nutrition in Western and Central Africa”, the event brought together regional leaders and representatives from over 20 West and Central African nations.

On 30 June 2017, the European Commission – Development & Cooperation, held a conference in Brussels on the European Union (EU) commitment to the SUN Movement and it’s country-led approach to ending malnutrition in all its forms.

On 12 June 2017, a new study was released by the New England Journal of Medicine on the Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity in 195 Countries over 25 Years. The study comes at a time where the rising pandemic of obesity is receiving major attention, yet the effects of this attention on trends and the disease burden of obesity remain uncertain.

In June 2017, Bread for the World released a new briefing paper to review the contribution of the United States in ending global malnutrition. The United States has been critical to global nutrition efforts for decades and the paper stresses that the country must continue to be a leader and honor their commitments.

Following months of strategic inter-agency work undertaken through a participative process by the members of the UN Network for SUN, the Heads of Agencies endorsed the Joint UN Nutrition Agenda for Burkina Faso, 2016–2020 (Agenda commun des Nations Unies pour la nutrition au Burkina Faso 2016–2020) during a UN Country Team meeting held on 7 June 2017.

In this post, we share the outputs from a recent visit to Delhi by ENN’s Asia based Regional KM Specialist Dr Charulatha Banerjee. She worked on a 3-part video series which captures different perspectives on private sector engagement in nutrition from India. In recent years there have been some important changes in how government and NGOs are working with corporates to improve social and health outcomes, including nutrition, which has produced some interesting learning opportunities.

From 10-19 July 2017, the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will be held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York, including a three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from 17 -19 July 2017.

In June 2017, the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition (GLOPAN), together with the Foundation for Community Development Mozambique and the Graça Machel Trust, held a series of three events focused on how government, civil society and the private sector might work together at the national, provincial and local level to develop scalable interventions to deliver high quality diets across Mozambique.

From 19-21 June 2017, a workshop on Integrating Gender and Nutrition within Agricultural Extension Services (INGENAES) was held in Gbarnga, Bong County, Liberia.

On 15 June 2017, Nutrition International launched the $CAD 9.1M (712M Ksh) “Right Start Initiative” in Kenya to improve the nutritional status of the population over the next five years.

On 21 June 2017, Nutrition International launched the $CAN 2.8M (4.7B TZS) “Right Start Initiative” in Tanzania to improve the nutritional status of the population over the next five years. The programme aims to reduce anaemia, neonatal mortality, the number of low birth weight newborns and the number of stunted children under five years old.

In May 2017, ENN published an new video interview with Gladys Mugambi, head of Kenya’s Nutrition and Dietetics Unit in the Ministry of Health and SUN Government Focal Point. In the video, Gladys discusses the nutrition sector’s past successes, current challenges and future perspectives in the country.

In June 2017, a new report was launched by Save the Children Australia which identifies the human and economic cost of child undernutrition in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The ground-breaking findings highlight that child undernutrition costs the PNG economy up to $USD 1.5 billion in a single year (FY 2015-16), representing 8.45% of its gross domestic product.

On 29 May 2017, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) launched a new tool at an event in Kenya. The tool is set to dramatically change the landscape of warning systems by using artificial intelligence to detect early signals of a brewing nutrition crisis.
