HarvestPlus Nigeria brings thousands together for a two-day Nutritious Food Fair

From 9 to 11 November 2016, HarvestPlus Nigeria held a three-day event that brought together nearly 5,000 stakeholders from research institutions and experts from agriculture, health, education, science & technology and trade & commerce. This was the second edition of the fair which took place at Tinapa venue and the Calabar International Convention Center in the Cross River State of Nigeria.

Malawi’s Minister of Health supports a local business to launch a new complementary food product

On 18 November 2016, VALID Nutition, a member of the SUN Business Network, launched a new Ready-to-Use Complementary Food (RUCF) in Lilongwe, Malawi. The product was formally launched by Dr. Peter Kumpalume, MP and Minister for Health, Malawi. The RUCF, also known as Small Quantity Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement (LNS-SQ), is approved by the Malawi Bureau of Standards and conforms fully to UNICEF specifications and standards for LNS-SQ (S0000245 Fortified spread, sachet 20g/CAR-546).

On 10 November 2016, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) together with the Global Health Centre, held an event in Geneva, Switzerland titled, “Protecting our Planet’s Health: Growing Cities, Poor Nutrition, What Can Be Done?”. Ending Hunger: What would it cost?

In October 2016, the report titled, “Ending Hunger: What would it cost?” was launched by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). According to the study, it will cost USD 11 billion a year of additional investments until 2030 to end hunger. This means a 40 percent increase over current spending of USD 8.6 billion on global hunger programs–based on the traditional share of donor spending in developing countries.

Official nomination of the first lady of the Republic of Guinea as ambassador of nutrition

On 21 September 2016, the Ministry of Health, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and all of the nutrition partners held a ceremony for the official bestowal of the title of Ambassador for Nutrition upon H.E Mrs Djené Kaba Condé, first lady of the Republic of Guinea. The title, symbolically engraved on a marble plaque, was solemnly handed over by Mrs Séraphine Wakana, Coordinator of the United Nations System in Guinea.

On 31 May 2016, the UN Network for Nutrition and Food Security in Myanmar came together for their first retreat in Yangon. Funded and facilitated by the UN Network’s REACH, the event brought together over 50 representatives from FAO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNOPS (LIFT and 3 MDG Multi-donor Trust Fund projects), WFP, World Bank, the UN Resident Coordinator’s office, including representatives of the UN Network at country level and the UN Network/REACH Secretariat at global level.
