Mozambique has seen economic growth between seven and eight percent during the last two decades, yet over half the population continues to live below the poverty line. Rates of stunting and chronic malnutrition among Mozambican children have shifted little in the past decade, falling from 48 percent in 2003 to 43 percent today.

European Development Commissioner and SUN Lead Group Member Andris Piebalgs and Director General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Jose Graziano da Silva made a join visit to Malawi, where they met with President Joyce Banda to discuss their commitment to providing assistance to the country in combating malnutrition and food insecurity.

A two-day conference in Brussels brought together representatives from SUN countries, donors, UN agencies, civil society, academia and the business community to ensure that nutrition remains at the top of the international development agenda.

An update on progress to date on efforts underway to estimate the overall cost of scaling up nutrition in SUN countries now available.

Business leaders will be holding a discussion that will feed in to the Post-2015 UN development agenda consultation led by the UN High Level Panel on Post-2015 Development. The discussion will focus on how nutrition should be prioritized in the Post-2015 UN development agenda, and the ways in which the private sector can effectively engage in the new framework to help end malnutrition.

National Civil Society Platforms in Ghana and Mali have recently been awarded $375,000 each through the SUN Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF).

On 31 January 2013, Mali held an official launch to showcase its activities with UN REACH and the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement as well as to raise awareness on the multi-sectoral aspects of nutrition.

Illustrating the high-level national political commitment for scaling up nutrition, 13 Governors representing all regions in Namibia met in Windhoek in August 2011 at the invitation of Prime Minister Angula, to build awareness about the nutrition situation in the country and all the respective regions. The regional Governors were galvanized into action and at the close of the meeting all 13 participants signed the Declaration of Commitment pledging their support to scale up nutrition.

The UK Government has reaffirmed their commitment to tackle hunger and malnutrition – confirming their promise to host a special event ahead of the G8 summit.

The efforts of the Movement for Scaling-Up Nutrition (SUN) are contributing to better nutrition for people in SUN countries – especially women and young children. We are pleased to share some examples in the January 2013 Update.

At a recent nutrition meeting I realized that I don’t yet have a clear idea of where nutrition should fit into the next set of development goals. I also realized that the wider nutrition community has not had this discussion either.As many critical decisions will be made in the next 6 months, we need to get our act together.

La création de la Coalition de la société civile pour le renforcement de la Nutrition en Ouganda (UCCO-SUN) renforcera les partenariats de plaidoyer pour une meilleure élaboration des politiques et allocation des ressources en vue de l’amélioration des résultats de la Nutrition. Le projet appuiera également le renforcement des capacités dans le cadre des efforts de mise en œuvre des OSC aux niveaux national et local et permettra le suivi et l’évaluation des investissements de la Nutrition ainsi que des rapports d’activités de SUN.

MPTF funding in Malawi will support the establishment of a strong, sustainable and influential Civil Society Organizations’ (CSO) Alliance to support the implementation of nutrition interventions outlined in the national agenda.

Funding to support a civil society platform in Niger will seek to build awareness and capacity for nutrition and strengthen the ability of civil society to coordinate on issues related to nutrition as well as conduct a unified outreach effort among government and donors.
